About the Program

Since 1929 LULAC has committed to advancing the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population of the United States. LULAC has long been a leading advocacy and research organization in the area of Latino policy & legislation, especially education; in 2007 LULAC joined with 9 leading research and civil rights organizations in the Campaign for High School Equity to develop and advocate for research-based state and federal policies that support effective secondary school reform. Specifically, we aim to ensure that high standards, aligned to college and work-readiness, are in place in all schools and that students are provided with the supports they need to attain academic success.

Description

Internship Qualifications:

  • Open to an undergraduate or graduate student interested in public policy, education, or federal advocacy. Candidate must have excellent oral communication, research, organization, and writing skills.
  • The position will work most closely on the Campaign for High School Equity project though opportunities will be available to work on areas in early childhood, K – 8 and higher education as the need arises.

Internship Responisbilites and Duties:

  • Assist Director of Policy & Legislation by conducting state and federal legislative research, tracking state and federal legislation, and attending congressional briefings and hearings;
  • Assist with the dissemination of policy & legislation information to community members on a consistent basis;
  • Support the Director of Policy & Legislation’s work to provide training & technical assistance to LULAC’s Parent Advocate Coordinators so that they can engage in sustained education advocacy;
  • Assist in the planning and execution of advocacy trainings and other such events as they occur;
  • Assist in the research and writing of policy & legislation pieces for the LULAC National News Magazine, the LULAC Monthly e-newsletter and other publications as necessary.
