About the Program

Position Overview: New Leaders is seeking a current graduate or undergraduate student for an internship with our Policy Team during the summer of 2015. The position will be located in our Washington, DC office, another New Leaders city site or remotely. The intern will work directly with the Policy Team on a wide variety of education policy matters. Depending on the specific assignment, the intern may have the opportunity to conduct research on the current state and federal legal and regulatory climate, draft and edit policy documents, or provide input on policy development. Specific Responsibilities: Research, summarize, and analyze state and federal policies and practices, including legislation and regulations. Support the creation of high-quality written materials, including drafting and editing policy documents and presentations. Provide input on the development of specific policy recommendations, tools, and resources. Support and collaborate with the Senior Director of Policy and others within the organization on discrete projects, including tailoring policy recommendations for specific state- and local-contexts. Track important education news and events at the federal- and state-level.

Requirements

Description

Qualifications: -Passionate belief that all students can achieve success through education and that great schools are led by great leaders. -Bachelor’s degree preferred. -Experience with state or federal policy development a plus. -Experience working in a school (especially the classroom) or with students a plus. -Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office suite. -Ability to work from New Leaders’ Washington, DC office preferred. Skills & Competencies: -Demonstrates strong attention to detail and follows through on all tasks, large and small, without reminders or significant oversight. The policy intern must be able to operate independently and with a high degree of personal responsibility over the quality and timely execution of all assignments, including managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously, prioritizing appropriately, and producing consistently high-quality work. -Exhibits motivation and a solutions-orientation in a face-paced environment. The policy intern must leverage excellent organizational and time-management skills in order to learn quickly and work in a fast-paced environment, including identifying challenges, elevating when necessary, and actively working to find solutions. -Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills, including excellent written and oral communications and relationship management abilities. The policy intern will work with a team based in offices across the country and must be able to work independently, build relationships, and communicate effectively to get the work done in a virtual environment.

Academic Requirements
