About the Program

The Multicultural Fellowship Program is a two-year, full-time program that aims to increase diversity in the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors. Successful candidates are young professionals of diverse cultural backgrounds who show promise and passion to create significant social change.  The Fellowship provides challenging work and professional development experiences, on-the-job training, and opportunities to enhance skills in grantmaking, convening, project management, and a variety of other areas. Fellows are an integral component of the Foundation’s grantmaking Program staff. Additionally, Fellows benefit from networking, mentoring, trainings, seminars, professional conferences, and interactions with a wide array of nonprofit, community, government, and philanthropic leaders. 

There are four Multicultural Fellowship positions open:

  • Community Development Program
  • Fellow Community Health Program
  • Fellow Education Program
  • Fellow Environment Program Fellow

Equivalent to $54,000 – $57,000 per year plus benefits. A standard work week of 40 hours, which will include periodic evening work and local travel, is required. 

Requirements

Description

A Master’s degree in a relevant area, or equivalent research and analysis experience preferred. A minimum of five years related work experience is required, in addition to the specific requirements for each of the program areas noted below. Strong oral and written communication skills, strong analytical skills.  Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Windows, Microsoft Word, and Excel required. Self-directed, team-oriented, leadership qualities desired. Eagerness to learn about the philanthropic sector and demonstrated interest in fundraising, donor development, nonprofit or public service, and work/volunteer experience in one of the Foundation’s specific program areas are required.

Academic Requirements

Community Development: Knowledge of community development and anti-poverty strategies with an understanding of equitable and sustainable communities, and economic security issues confronting low-income people.  Background in workforce development, affordable housing, foreclosure policy and prevention; asset building and wealth creation in low-income communities and/or experience in community economic development and finance are desired.

Community Health: Understanding of epidemiology, quantitative methods, health policy, management and evaluation are desired.  Some background or work experience in the health care delivery system or a public or state health department is a plus. Must have an understanding of health disparities, cultural competency and community based work with vulnerable populations.

Education: Deep knowledge in the areas of Full Service Community Schools, Early Childhood Education or Education Equity/Education for Social Justice, with an understanding of the historical impact of structural racism, bias, and discrimination in public education.  A background in education policy or contemporary school reform is also desirable.

Environment: Education and experience in the areas of environmental policy and advocacy; climate resilience and urban sustainability; and energy, food and water systems. A background in Bay Area environmental justice issues and familiarity with Bay Area environmental non-profits is desired.
