About the Program

This program provides an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students across Texas to gain real experience working in the Texas House of Representatives. Program participants will be placed in one of the MALC Caucus members’ offices and serve as full-time policy fellows. In addition to learning the legislative process and developing their leadership skills, participants will receive a monthly stipend to assist with living expenses Fellows must be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a two or four year accredited institution, having completed at least 60 hours. Recent graduates are also welcome to apply. Applicant must be 21 years of age or older (as of January 8, 2015).

Fellows will work alongside experienced legislative staff and participate in weekly seminars where they will interact with other program participants, Latino leaders, elected officials and state agency representatives. In addition to learning the legislative process and developing their leadership skills, participants will receive a monthly stipend to assist with living expenses. Applicants should understand that all program participants will be considered full-time staff by the members’ offices where they are placed. Though responsibilities may vary from office to office, program participants should expect to work beyond a typical 40-hour work week. The determination of how many credit hours the Legislative Leadership Program qualifies for will vary among colleges and universities - it is the student’s responsibility to learn how their respective schools award academic credit.
