Additional Benefits

The Valedictorian Club (V-Club) was the first program established by BALF in 2006 with sixty 8th grade students from Roosevelt Elementary School District (RESD) and has since then expanded into the Phoenix Elementary School District. Students are selected as "Valedictorians" of their respective schools, not on academic merit, but on character, leadership potential and the desire to succeed. Once referred to as "Valedictorians," these students start to develop a sense of accomplishment and realize the great potential within them. V-Club’s focus is on the development of leadership skills, providing its participants with the tools to break down the barriers preventing them from finding a college degree, a realistic goal and empowering students with the knowledge to plan their high school and college educational pursuits (4+4 Plan) . The V-Club program accomplishes its goals through its 8 workshop series that coincides with the academic year and by providing each participant with a mentor to guide them. To date, V-Club has promoted over one hundred students into the high school system with a strong sense of becoming college bound, focused and prepared.  V-Club accepts applications for its program during each Spring Semester for the following academic year.

The V-Club Curriculum includes the following 8 workshop topics:  Life Planning - Where are you Going?  Academic Planning and Transcript Review  Technology Day - Learning about Computers and the Internet  Leadership and Civic Involvement  Decision Making  Paying for College through Leadership & Academic Preparedness  My College Bound Journey  Graduation - How have I Grown as A Leader?
