About the Program |
DC-CAP places advisors in all DC public and charter senior high schools to counsel students in grades nine through twelve. These dedicated advisors work to build awareness among freshmen and sophomores of the importance of college. Advisors counsel juniors and seniors individually on college selection and completing admission applications. DC-CAP advisors help students identify and apply for financial aid to pay for college. DC-CAP also provides "Last Dollar" awards for up to $2,070 per year, for up to five years of college, to close the financial needs gap between students' resources, financial aid and actual college expenses. High School and College Retention services are rendered year round in Washington, DC. DC-CAP advisors are housed in DC-CAP College Information Resource Centers located in each of the public and public charter high schools where they provide direct college counseling services to the students and their parents, grades 9 to 12, through individual meetings, group sessions, written materials and specialized workshops. DC-CAP advisors work with students individually and in groups to help motivate and prepare them to enter and graduate college. DC-CAP assists all students with the college selection process. We provide guidance in all facets of the college application process. DC-CAP also provides parents with educational planning workshops, financial aid seminars, college counseling and other services designed to educate parents, who then can help their children in making informed choices. DC-CAP works with DC public and public charter high school graduates for up to five years after their high school graduation, to ensure they are able to complete their college education. Advisors will work with on-campus student support services including academic advisors, financial aid directors and others to support DC students. Each year advisors assess students’ financial resources and ensure they have the necessary monies to complete their next year of college. In addition, DC-CAP provides college students with individual services including mentoring, academic, financial aid and administrative support, a toll-free hotline, on-campus visits by retention staff, regular financial aid and scholarship correspondence, college tours, summer pre-college program and written materials. DC public and public charter high school graduates, who meet eligibility criteria, and are enrolled in an accredited two-year, four-year institution or vocational school, are eligible to apply for DC-CAP Last Dollar Awards, with a maximum amount of $2,070 per year for five years. The awards are based on unmet need and are designed to close the financial needs gap between the students’ resources, financial aid and the actual college expenses. DC -CAP offers the Last Dollar Award Program for students who are registered participants of the program and have graduated or will graduate from a District of Columbia public or public charter high school. In order to apply for the Last Dollar Award and determine if you are eligible, you must submit the following documents: Submit a completed DC-CAP Authorization Form Complete the FAFSA and DC TAG Applications Submit copies of the following: Student Aid Report (SAR), Financial Aid Award Letter, and grades for the previous semesters/years in college. For high school student you must submit your final transcript. Note: The minimum GPA requirement to be eligible for the award is a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students whose GPA falls below a 2.0 are encouraged to contact the Retention Office for academic counseling. Last Dollar Award priority deadline is May 31 for entering freshmen and upperclassmen renewals for the Fall. |
