About the Program

As a member of the Great Oaks Tutor Corps, you will mentor and tutor middle and high school students at a Great Oaks Charter School for the duration of one school year (August-June).  This is service role with regular full-time hours Monday-Friday with some tutors participating in Saturday Academy as well. At Great Oaks, around half of our tutors are members of the AmeriCorps National Service Network which provides additional benefits.

The ideal candidate is a bright, talented college graduate interested in committing a year of service. Great Oaks has schools in Newark, NJ, New York, NY, Bridgeport, CT and Wilmington, DE.  The Tutor Corps plays an integral role in helping our schools achieve their mission: to prepare students to succeed in college. Great Oaks is seeking individuals who are motivated, enthusiastic and up for one of the most rewarding challenges of their lives.

Requirements

Description

As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the mission of Great Oaks. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for breaking new ground to lead social change. A successful candidate will also bring the following qualifications and competencies: 

    • A strong academic record with a Bachelor’s degree from a competitive college or university
    • Experience working with students; tutoring experience preferable
    • Exceptional ability to respond well to feedback and implement it immediately
    • Tenacity, adaptability, passion and excellent communication skills
