About the Program

If integrity, determination, and courage describe a student you know; then, you may be looking at a Horatio Alger Scholar. Our scholarships reward students who possess the character to succeed in life. We help students overcome the financial barriers of pursuing higher education.

At the present only two public universities, Longwood and Mary Washington, are consortium members along with nine privately funded institutions of higher learning in Virginia. Participating institutions agree to match the Horatio Alger scholarship funds through university scholarships, grants, and work-study programs

Requirements

Description

To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger National Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be enrolled full time as a high school senior, progressing normally toward graduation in spring/summer of 2016 with plans to enter college no later than the fall following graduation

• Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution located in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution)

• Demonstrate critical financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required)

• Be involved in co-curricular and community activities

• Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity

• Hold a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0

 

• Be a United States citizen
