Health Policy Intern

Description: The intern will work on two projects in the Health Services and Research Section of the Domestic Social Policy Division.

(1) Compile a detailed funding history of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA); this project is impacted by budget documents in which line items do not sum to totals and by changes in the budget structure over time. (2) Update and expand a web-based database of information about prescription drug abuse policy, including legislation, hearings, position papers, research, etc.; this project uses SharePoint. Position requires: excellent attention to detail, advanced skill in Excel, including using formulas (e.g., IFERROR, VLOOKUP), linking data from one workbook to another and embedding html links, ability to learn new software, and skill in searching web-based databases (e.g. LexisNexis) and the Internet. All academic levels will be considered. 

Health Insurance & Financing Intern

Description: Working in the Health Insurance & Financing Section of the Domestic Social Policy Division, the intern will assist with one or both of the following projects: (1) A new CRS report that describes how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) affects health insurance coverage offered in the private health insurance market in terms of benefits, network adequacy, and costs. The intern will work with CRS analysts to research and write select sections of the report. (2) A new CRS report that provides a brief overview of the ACA health insurance exchanges. The report will be based on an existing CRS report on exchanges; the intern will determine the content of the shorter report and write the report with assistance from CRS analysts. Additionally, the intern will help CRS analysts respond to Congressional requests and participate in briefings and presentations as needed. Position requires: Strong writing skills, the ability to work independently, interest in health policy, and experience finding, reading and analyzing publications from academic journals, think tanks, and government agencies. Graduate or Ph.D. student preferred.

International Trade and Finance Intern (Asia)

Description: The intern will work with a CRS analyst in the Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade Division on a number of projects involving U.S. trade and economic relations with China. The work is expected to include, for use by Members of Congress and staff, a new report on China’s state-owned enterprises. The intern will also help answer Congressional requests on China and attend CRS briefings conducted for Congressional staff. The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of the Chinese language in order to help translate Chinese government documents and reports, good research and writing skills, and basic knowledge of the Chinese economy. Undergraduate or graduate student preferred.

Library Intern

Description: Projects/assignments the intern is expected to work on in the Government & Finance consulting section of the Knowledge Services Group include; conducting research under the guidance of an Information Research Specialist, attending training on legislative process and information research, and participating in collection management and development activities. Library Intern II

Description: Working in the Domestic Social Policy consulting section of the Knowledge Services Group, the intern will assist in setting up and

populating SharePoint sites on gun violence and immigration. Duties may also include providing research support in the

consulting area. The ideal candidate will be a current library/information science student or have an interest in library services.

Candidates should have experience using SharePoint, Excel, Adobe Pro, and some database aggregators (e.g. LexisNexis).

Legal Research Intern

Description: Working in the American Law consulting section of the Knowledge Services Group, the intern will assist law librarians with responding to large requests such as retrieving and formatting information for 50-state surveys and compiling documents for legislative histories of selected Acts. The ideal candidate will have an interest in legal research and strong research and problem solving skills. Archives and Records Management Intern

Description: As an intern in the Office of Information Management and Technology, the intern will be assigned to assist staff with projects such

as:

• arrangement and description of the CRS Archives

• Identifying aids used to locate materials within the CRS Archives

• assisting with the development of an Archives portal and database for storing records and identifying aids

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of archival arrangement and description, excellent attention to detail, ability to work

independently, and basic computer skills. Work experience with archives desired but not required. A graduate student in a

history or MLS/MLIS program with a concentration in Archives is preferred.

Content Management Intern

Description: Working in the Office of Information Management and Technology, the intern’s duties may include:

• addressing requests received from the CRS research divisions and offices and via the “CRS Research Product Clearance

Form”

• preparing and publishing weekly web site usage metrics and search statistics

• search thesaurus management

• system testing

The ideal candidate will have experience with concepts and development of metadata and taxonomy. Should have experience with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel 2010 and be familiar with MS SharePoint 2007. Undergraduate or graduate student preferred.

Military Personnel Intern

Description: Working in the Defense Budget, Manpower and Management Section of the Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade Division, the intern will conduct research on military personnel policy topics related to military compensation and force structure, and draft written products based on this research. The ideal candidate will have some prior background in military personnel policy; superior research and writing skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision; and proficiency with standard Microsoft Office products. Graduate students and Ph.D. candidates with a concentration in public policy, national security, government, or political science are encourage to apply.
